Just Eat Delivery Insurance

hire and reward cover for booked delivery shifts, whatever contract sits behind them

Hire and reward cover for a courier delivering restaurant orders for payment. It runs across a booked shift rather than order by order, applies to cars and two wheels alike, and is rated on the hours, the area and the driver.

  • Booked shift slots
  • Self-employed or employed
  • Cars and two wheels
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerTaking restaurant orders for payment is hire and reward work, and an ordinary policy excludes it. What varies on this platform is the arrangement behind the delivery: some couriers work booked shift slots as self-employed, others deliver under an employment contract, and who insures the vehicle depends on which. Tell us the vehicle and the shifts, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

The basics

What a Booked Shift Slot Changes for You

Booked hours make the working week unusually easy to describe, which is helpful at the quote. What still has to be settled is who owns the vehicle and who insures it, because that varies with the contract rather than the platform.

Hire and reward use

What permits the paid drop.

The hours booked

Evenings and weekends mostly.

The contract held

Self-employed or employed.

The delivery area

Set by the restaurants served.

Who else drives

Anybody covering a shift.

Overnight security

Where the vehicle is kept.

How it works

Between the Enquiry and the Price

It is a quick form. The care goes into what you carry and how far, because those are the fields an underwriter reads first.

  1. Say what you deliver

It decides most of the price.

  2. Name the drivers

    Age and experience both count.

  3. Describe the work

Booked shift slots, restaurant collections, weekend peaks or occasional hours.

  4. Compare properly

Cover level, goods limit, excess and downtime.

What it covers

The Cover Behind a Booked Delivery Slot

Vehicle cover on hire and reward terms for the shift you have booked, with liability alongside it and something to keep you working after a theft.

Find out who insures the vehicle. A self-employed courier arranges everything; somebody delivering under an employment contract may be covered by the business, and the answer decides what you need to buy.

What it leaves out

Where a Booked Shift Leaves You Exposed

The cover is for paid delivery work. What follows sits outside it, and the list is short enough to read properly.

Journeys outside the declared use

Including deliveries on a social policy.

Parcels damaged or stolen

Goods in transit answers for those.

Parts that simply fail

Age and mileage are not insured events.

Downtime after a claim

Unless you have bought cover for it.

Anyone not named or permitted

Round cover has to be arranged properly.

How orders are allocated

The Ways Orders Are Allocated

How the work reaches a courier says more about the risk than the name on the bag, and it is what the quote should describe.

Booked shift slots

Hours agreed in advance.

Weekend peak shifts

Short and busy.

Restaurant-area rounds

Tied to a set of kitchens.

Employed delivery roles

Rota rather than self-booking.

Car delivery on wider areas

Longer runs per order.

Two-wheel town work

Short, dense hops.

Who it suits

The Couriers Taking Restaurant Orders

Restaurant delivery draws people who want predictable hours, which distinguishes it from free-roaming app work.

Self-employed shift couriers

Booking their own hours.

Employed delivery drivers

Cost

What Prices a Booked Delivery Shift

The hours, the area, the vehicle, the driver and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.

Why booked hours help the quote

Most delivery workers struggle to say how much they actually work. Booked slots remove that guesswork, and an accurate hours figure is one of the few things that reliably produces a price that holds at renewal.

Why the restaurant area matters

Deliveries radiate out from kitchens, so the area worked is fixed by where they sit. Town centre clusters mean dense traffic and difficult parking; suburban ones mean distance.

The details

Four Conditions Across a Booked Shift

A short list, but the one that matters. An insurer will look at these first if you ever claim on Just Eat delivery work.

  1. Declare the work as delivery

Not as business use on a private policy.

  2. Review the goods limit

    Peak season loads are heavier.

  3. Keep drivers declared

Before the first drop, not after.

  4. Work the hours the policy describes

Booked slots make that easy to keep to.

FAQs

Just Eat Delivery Insurance FAQs

Answers on shift slots, courier contracts, employed work, vehicles and private use.

Do I need my own insurance for this work?

If you are self-employed and using your own vehicle, yes, and it has to be hire and reward cover. Where you deliver under an employment contract in a vehicle the business provides, ask them for written confirmation of what their policy covers.

Will a private policy do for a few shifts a week?

No. The exclusion applies from the first paid delivery, not after some number of them. A claim made during any shift would not be answered, however occasional the work is.

Does booking shifts in advance help the quote?

It does, because it gives you an accurate hours figure. Most delivery workers estimate their week badly, and a quote built on a guess is the kind that unravels at renewal or at claim stage.

Can I work other apps on the same evening?

Usually yes, subject to the contract you have signed. Tell the insurer, because two platforms in one evening means a longer shift and often a wider area than booked slots alone suggest.

What if the restaurant supplies the vehicle?

Then their policy is likely to be the one that matters, but confirm it in writing. The excess and any personal liability can still land on the driver, which is worth knowing before something happens rather than after.

Is car delivery accepted on this work?

Yes, and it is common where the delivery area is spread out. It is rated as car courier work, with mileage and parking counting for more than they would on a moped.

Do I need public liability?

It is worth having. Steps, hallways and communal doors are where the awkward claims start, and that exposure has nothing to do with how you drive or ride.

Can I use the vehicle outside the shift?

Where social and domestic use has been added. It is usual on a courier policy but not automatic, so confirm it rather than assuming cover follows you off shift.

Can I deliver on a private car policy?

No. Carrying goods for payment is excluded, so the policy would not answer a claim made on a job. It is the single most common and most expensive misunderstanding in delivery work.

Is the load insured by the van policy?

It is not. Goods in transit is a separate cover responding to the parcels, and without it a stolen load is your own cost to make good.

Does it cover me driving privately?

Where social use has been included, which is usual but not universal. Ask directly, because a quote written for delivery alone leaves your own driving out.

How are convictions treated?

They are rated rather than automatically refused, and specialist brokers deal with them routinely. What causes real problems is failing to mention one and having it surface after a claim.

What covers me while the vehicle is repaired?

A replacement vehicle section or loss of earnings cover. Neither is standard, and for a courier whose income stops with the vehicle they are usually worth more than a small saving on the premium.

Why does overnight parking matter so much?

Because that is where the vehicle spends most of its life, and a delivery van is a known target. Describe the actual arrangement rather than calling a street a driveway.

Can I put another driver on?

Yes, and shared rounds are normal. Each driver is rated separately, so adding a newly qualified one will move the price more than adding an experienced driver.

Does the type of work change the rating?

It does. Multi-drop parcels, food delivery and longer freight runs produce different stop counts and different load values, and insurers price the pattern rather than the job title.
