Deliveroo Delivery Insurance
hire and reward cover in your own name, whatever the platform provides alongside it
Hire and reward cover held in the rider’s own name for delivery work taken through the Deliveroo platform. It permits carrying food for payment, runs across the whole shift, and is rated on the rider, the machine and the hours.
- Cover in your own name
- Substitute arrangements declared
- Bikes, mopeds and cars
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerDelivering for Deliveroo is paid carriage, so a private car or machine policy will not answer a claim made on a job. Platforms differ in what they provide and it is usually partial, which leaves your own hire and reward policy doing the substantial work. The account arrangement, including any substitute, is worth describing at the quote. Tell us the machine and the shift, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

The basics
Where the Rider Account Stops and Yours Begins
The account is a commercial arrangement, not an insurance policy. Whatever cover comes with it, the vehicle, the hours between orders and your own liability generally remain yours to arrange.
Hire and reward use
What permits the paid job.
What the platform provides
Confirmed rather than assumed.
Substitute arrangements
Anyone else using the account.
Hours worked
Evenings and weekends mostly.
Zones ridden
Where the orders come from.
How the machine is kept
Overnight security.
How it works
Putting Deliveroo Cover Together
The process is short. What matters is describing the load and the work accurately, because a courier quote is built on those rather than on the vehicle.
What goes in the vehicle
And roughly what it is worth.
Who is doing the driving
You alone, or drivers on rounds.
Describe the work
Evening order shifts, weekend peaks, zone work or occasional hours.
Weigh the quotes up
Price against limits and conditions.
What it covers
The Cover Behind a Deliveroo Shift
Vehicle cover on hire and reward terms that runs for the whole time you are working, with liability alongside it and something to keep you moving after a theft.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Liability to other road users | Every level | Injury and damage you cause |
| Theft and fire | Third party fire and theft upwards | Security conditions apply |
| Damage to Deliveroo delivery work | Comprehensive | Repairs, or a settlement if written off |
| The goods carried | Not in the motor policy | Goods in transit is arranged alongside |
| Liability at the delivery point | Public liability | Away from the driving itself |
| Replacement vehicle | Worth pricing | Deliveries do not wait |
| Legal expenses | Optional | Disputes and uninsured losses |
Get the platform position in writing. What a delivery app provides changes over time and differs by country and by vehicle, so a screenshot of the current terms is worth more than anybody’s recollection of them.
What it leaves out
The Gaps Around a Rider Account
Every policy has edges. On Deliveroo delivery work they fall in fairly predictable places, and none of them is a surprise once somebody has pointed them out.
Use the policy does not describe
Private journeys need adding, not assuming.
Damage to the load
That is a goods in transit question.
Breakdown and deterioration
Ordinary wear is not damage.
Income lost while off the road
Unless a loss of earnings section is taken.
Unlisted drivers
Everyone at the wheel has to be declared.
Somebody riding the account without cover
A substitute needs a policy of their own.
How riders work it
How Riders Work the Platform
The account is used in several quite different ways, and the way you use it changes what the cover has to do.
Regular evening shifts
The commonest pattern.
Weekend peak riding
Short, intense hours.
Zone hopping
Repositioning for demand.
Riding with a substitute
Somebody covering the account.
Delivering by car
Wider zones, larger orders.
Alongside other platforms
Two or three apps a shift.

Who it suits
The Riders Signed Up to the Platform
Platform delivery attracts people who want to choose their own hours, and the group is unusually varied as a result.
Full-time platform riders
Delivery as the whole income.
Students and part-timers
Evenings and weekends.
Riders between other work
Short-term income.
Drivers delivering by car
Wider zones.
Riders on hired machines
Supplied by a hire firm.
Riders using a substitute
Sharing an account lawfully.
Riding generally rather than one app? See delivery rider insurance.
Riding yourself or a substitute
Riding Yourself vs Using a Substitute
The platform permits an account holder to send somebody else in certain circumstances, and the insurance has to keep up with that.
| You ride | Substitute | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is on the road | You | Your substitute |
| Whose policy responds | Yours | Theirs, not yours |
| What has to be checked | Your own cover | Their cover, every time |
| Who the platform pays | You | You, then you settle up |

What Shapes the Price of a Platform Shift
The rider, the machine, the hours, the zones and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why the zone tells an underwriter so much
Order density follows restaurants, so platform riding concentrates in the busiest parts of a town. The zones you ride describe the traffic, the pedestrians and the theft risk better than a mileage figure would.
Why riding years outweigh the machine
Two riders on identical scooters can be priced very differently. Time spent licensed and time spent riding for a living are the fields that shift the premium.

What to Gather Before Insuring the Account
A broker will ask for all of this. Gathering it first turns several calls into one.
Who drives
You alone, or drivers on rounds.
The load
Evening order shifts, weekend peaks, zone work or occasional hours.
Vehicle details
Including any conversion or racking.
Goods in transit limit wanted
Sized to a full vehicle.
Overnight parking
A locked shed, a garage, a driveway or the street.
Claims and convictions
Five years is usually asked for.
Comparing
Two Quotes for the Same Rider Account
Price is the easy part to compare. What follows is the rest of it, and it matters more.
Who is covered
- Named drivers or any eligible driver
- Age and experience limits
- Cover for drivers on rounds
What it pays
- Goods in transit limit
- Public liability limit
- Excesses, compulsory and voluntary
On this work specifically
- Cover when no order is active

FAQs
Deliveroo Delivery Insurance FAQs
Answers on the rider account, substitutes, platform cover, machines and private use.
Does Deliveroo insure me while I ride?
Platforms typically provide something limited, and the detail changes over time and by vehicle. Ask for the current terms in writing rather than relying on what another rider tells you, and treat it as sitting alongside your own cover rather than replacing it.
Can I ride on my ordinary policy?
No. Carrying food for payment is excluded from private car and machine policies, so a claim made while working would not be answered. That applies from the moment you start taking paid orders.
What about a substitute rider?
Where the platform permits one, the substitute needs their own hire and reward cover. Yours follows you and your machine, not the account, so check their policy before they ride rather than afterwards.
Am I covered between orders?
Under your own policy, yes, because it covers the work rather than the app state. Under platform cover, frequently not, which is the practical reason riders buy their own policy at all.
Does it matter which zones I ride?
It does. Zones describe the streets, the traffic and the theft exposure, and a central zone prices differently from a suburban one even for the same rider on the same machine.
Can I deliver by car instead?
Yes, and it is common where zones are wide. The use class is the same, but it is rated as car courier work, with mileage and parking mattering more than they do on two wheels.
Do I need cover for the orders themselves?
Rarely worth it for the food. Liability at the door is the exposure that matters, because that is where a claim can be far larger than any order you have ever carried.
Can I use the machine privately?
Where social and domestic use has been added. It is usual on this kind of policy but not guaranteed, so confirm it rather than assuming the cover follows you off shift.
Will a normal policy cover delivering for Deliveroo?
It will not. Carrying goods for payment is excluded from private and ordinary business policies, so the cover simply does not respond. That exclusion is the reason courier insurance exists.
Do I need goods in transit as well?
If you would have to replace what you are carrying, yes. The motor policy insures the vehicle and nothing inside it, which surprises couriers more often than it should.
Is delivery work the same as haulage?
Not to an insurer. Multi-drop courier work means many short stops and frequent door openings, where haulage means fewer, longer journeys. They are priced differently.
Can I use the van privately?
Where social and domestic use has been added, which is usual but worth confirming. A policy written for delivery alone leaves your own journeys uninsured.
Am I paid while the vehicle is repaired?
Only if you took a loss of earnings or replacement vehicle section. A courier off the road earns nothing, so for many drivers it is the most valuable part of the policy.
How much does the overnight address matter?
Enough to be worth thinking about. The vehicle spends most of its life there, and a van known to carry parcels is more interesting to a thief than an ordinary car.
Can the round be shared between drivers?
Yes, where each of them is on the policy. Shared rounds are normal, but a driver who is not listed is not covered, however briefly they take the wheel.
Does the platform I work for change anything?
Less than how you work. Stop counts, hours worked and the value on board are what shape the risk, and those are what an insurer wants described. Naming the app tells an underwriter very little about the round you actually run.
