Removal Company Insurance

cover for a firm moving other people’s possessions, in and out of their homes

Business cover for a firm moving household or commercial goods. It combines hire and reward motor cover, goods in transit on customer possessions, public liability for damage at the property and employers liability for the crew.

  • Customer possessions covered
  • Liability inside the property
  • Crew and storage included
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerA removals firm carries the one category of load nobody treats as replaceable: somebody else’s home. Alongside hire and reward cover on the vehicles sit goods in transit for the contents, public liability for the damage done to doorframes and driveways, and employers liability for the crew. Tell us the vehicles, the crew and the work, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

Only after cover on the load? Our goods in transit insurance page covers that on its own.

At a glance

Moving Homes: Six Points to Start With

Six things a removals firm has to get right before the first job.

The load is irreplaceable to the customer
Sentiment does not reduce a claim
Employers liability covers the crew
Lifting work produces injuries
Damage happens inside the property
Doorframes, floors and driveways
Storage is a separate exposure
Goods off the vehicle need their own cover
Packing changes who is responsible
Customer-packed boxes are treated differently
Inventories decide disputes
Condition recorded at both ends

The basics

Why Customer Possessions Change the Problem

Parcels have an invoice value. A household does not, and the argument after a damaged piano or a scratched table is about proof and condition rather than about price. The cover and the paperwork have to be built for that.

Goods in transit

Customer possessions on the vehicle.

Public liability

Damage to the property itself.

Employers liability

The crew doing the lifting.

Storage cover

Goods held between moves.

Who packed it

Responsibility follows the packing.

Inventory and condition

Recorded at collection.

How it works

Removals Quoted in Four Steps

Four questions cover most of it: the vehicle, the load, the drivers and the cover level. The load does more to the price than the van does.

  1. Describe the vehicle

    Car, van, bike or moped.

  2. Describe the work

Household moves, part loads, office relocations, storage or single-item deliveries.

  3. Add the drivers

Everybody who will be at the wheel.

  4. Read the terms

Not just the premium at the bottom.

What it covers

The Covers a Removals Firm Runs Side by Side

Several policies rather than one, and the useful work is in making sure the seams between them do not leave a customer’s belongings uninsured for an afternoon.

The covers a removals business normally holds
SectionWhere it sitsWhat to know
Third-party coverThe base of any policyInjury and damage to other people
Fire and theft of the vehicleMiddle level upwardsRated on where it is kept
Own damageComprehensiveIncluding damage while loading
Load coverSeparateGoods in transit responds to the parcels
Public and products liabilityAdded alongsideDoorsteps and what you hand over
Personal accidentOptionalFor a driver with no sick pay
Loss of earningsAn add-onIncome while off the road

The gap is usually at the door. Goods in transit may begin at the vehicle and public liability may stop at the property, so ask which policy answers for a wardrobe dropped on the path between them.

What it leaves out

The Damage a Removals Policy Will Argue About

None of this is fine print for its own sake. These are the gaps that catch couriers out, and most of them close by declaring something at the quote.

Carrying for payment without the right cover

An ordinary policy will not respond.

The goods being carried

Insured separately, and sized to the load.

Mechanical and electrical failure

Unless caused by an insured event.

Lost income

A separate section, where offered.

Drivers outside the terms

Age and experience conditions apply.

Damage to goods the customer packed

Own-packed boxes are commonly excluded.

Jobs firms take

The Jobs a Removals Firm Takes On

Removals covers a wide spread of work, and the mix decides which of the covers does the heavy lifting.

Equipment and records.

Storage between moves

Goods held in a unit.

Piano, antique and fine art moves

Who it suits

The Firms Moving Other People’s Homes

Removals runs from one person with a Luton to a firm with a depot and a dozen crews, and the covers scale with the shape of it.

Man and van operators

Small loads, local work.

Family removals firms

A few vehicles and regular crews.

Removals firms with storage

A unit as well as vehicles.

Commercial relocation specialists

Offices, schools and labs.

Fine art and specialist movers

High values, careful handling.

Long-distance and part-load operators

Shared vehicles, several customers.

Mostly parcels rather than furniture? See van courier insurance.

Household or commercial

Household Removals vs Commercial Office Moves

Both move possessions, and insurers see two rather different jobs behind them.

Cost

What a Removals Firm Is Priced On

The vehicles, the crew, the values carried, the storage and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.

Why the crew figure is asked for

Removals is manual work, and employers liability is rated on wages because wages describe how many people are lifting and for how long. Casual and seasonal labour counts, so it belongs in the estimate rather than outside it.

Why storage is treated separately

Once goods leave the vehicle and sit in a unit they are no longer in transit. That is a different exposure with different security questions, and it is priced as such.

Run a proper inventory

It ends most disputes.

It is rated on its own.

The details

Four Obligations on Moving Day

Conditions are where courier claims are won and lost. The four below come up repeatedly.

  1. Hold hire and reward cover

It is what makes the work insured at all.

  2. Match the goods limit to the van

    Not to an average day.

  3. List everybody who drives

    Including occasional cover.

  4. Record condition at both ends

An inventory protects the firm as much as the customer.

Quote checklist

What the Broker Needs About the Removals Work

None of it is hard to find. Having it to hand is the difference between a quick quote and a drawn-out one.

The vehicle

Car, van, bike or moped.

What goes on board

Household moves, part loads, office relocations, storage or single-item deliveries.

Every driver

Including relief and weekend cover.

Where it sleeps

A yard, a depot, a storage unit or the street.

Load values

Typical and maximum.

Mileage and radius

Local rounds or long distance.

Comparing

Two Removals Quotes, Cover by Cover

Set two quotes side by side and work through this. The differences will be here rather than in the premium.

Sections included

  • Level of cover on the vehicle
  • Goods in transit and its limit
  • Public liability, if included

The practical terms

  • Replacement vehicle provision
  • Overnight parking conditions
  • Excess on glass and on the main cover

On this work specifically

  • Customer-packed goods treated how
  • Storage included or separate
  • Damage to the property covered

Ask who is responsible for boxes the customer packed. It is the commonest argument in the trade. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

Reducing the Cost of Moving People

The levers are inventories, crew training, storage security and accurate wage figures. We publish no savings figures.

Photograph and list everything

Disputes shrink immediately.

Train and retain the crew

Experience shows in the record.

Improve depot and unit security

Directly rated.

Give accurate wage estimates

Adjustments work both ways.

Review goods limits yearly

Values drift upwards.

Not policy by policy.

FAQs

Removal Company Insurance FAQs

Answers on customer possessions, packing, storage, staff and working inside homes.

Are customer possessions covered on the vehicle?

Under goods in transit, yes, up to the limit you buy. It is a separate cover from the motor policy and it should be sized to the value of a full household rather than to what an average job looks like.

What about boxes the customer packed themselves?

Commonly excluded, or covered only where the box itself is visibly damaged. The reasoning is that the firm cannot vouch for what went in or how, which is why packing services and inventories matter commercially as well as practically.

Does the policy pay for damage to the house?

That falls to public liability rather than goods cover. Scraped doorframes, cracked tiles and damaged driveways are routine in removals, and the limit should reflect the kind of properties you work in.

Do we need employers liability for casual crew?

Almost always. Casual and seasonal helpers generally count as employees for this purpose, and their wages belong in the estimate. Leaving them out understates the exposure and the premium gets corrected later.

Is storage covered by the transit policy?

Not once the goods are off the vehicle and in a building. Storage is its own cover with its own security requirements, so if you hold customer goods between moves it needs arranging explicitly.

How should high-value items be handled?

Declare them. Pianos, antiques, art and specialist equipment sit above the ordinary limit and are often listed separately, and a firm that moves them regularly should be quoted on that basis rather than a general one.

What paperwork protects the firm?

An inventory taken at collection with condition noted and photographed, signed by the customer, and the same at delivery. It resolves most claims quickly and it is the least costly risk management in the trade.

Are part loads treated differently?

They can be, because several customers’ goods share a vehicle and a single incident affects all of them. Mention it, since the total value on board is higher than any one job suggests.

Why will my existing policy not do?

Because it excludes hire and reward. The moment somebody pays you to move something, an ordinary policy stops responding, whether the job came from an app or a contract.

How much goods cover do I need?

Enough to replace a full vehicle load rather than an average one. It is the maximum on board at any moment that matters, and peak season is when that figure is tested.

Does public liability come with it?

Not automatically. It responds to injury or damage at the delivery point rather than on the road, and for anybody carrying goods to doorsteps it is worth having.

Are convictions a problem?

They narrow the market and raise the price rather than ending the conversation. Declare everything, because an undeclared conviction is a straightforward route to a refused claim.

Is downtime covered?

Not as standard. Loss of earnings is an optional section and a replacement vehicle is another, and between them they decide whether a week in a bodyshop costs you a week of income.

Does the parking arrangement change the premium?

It is one of the main factors. A vehicle behind a gate, on a driveway or on a street will each be rated differently for the same driver and the same round.

Can more than one person drive?

Yes, provided each is declared on the policy. Insurers expect shared rounds in this trade, but everybody at the wheel has to be on the schedule before they drive.

Is peak season worth mentioning?

It is. Load values and hours both rise sharply in the run-up to Christmas, and a goods limit set for an ordinary week will be well short in December.
