Lunar Caravan Insurance
cover for a Lunar tourer, and the question of when a repair is still worth doing
Cover for a Lunar touring caravan, now a used-market van. It answers for sudden damage, theft and storm, and because the marque is no longer built the repair-or-settle question and the agreed value behind it carry unusual weight.
- A Preston-built marque
- Now bought used
- Repair thresholds matter
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerLunar built in Preston and its vans are now bought second-hand rather than new. That puts a particular question at the centre of the cover: at what point does a repair stop being worth doing and become a settlement instead. On a marque no longer in production that line arrives sooner than owners expect, which is why the basis of claim matters. Tell us the van and what it is worth, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.
Another marque no longer built? Our Abbey caravan insurance page covers those vans.

- Repairs reach the write-off line sooner
- On a van with a modest market value
- An agreed value changes that maths
- Fix the figure in advance
- Condition beats the year
- A cared-for Lunar is worth more
- The damp record is the key document
- Ask for it before buying
- Storage still leads the rating
- Whatever the age of the van
- Parts come from the trade
- Rather than from a factory
The basics
The Lunar Details an Underwriter Asks For
A Lunar is judged on condition and on what it would take to put right. Both of those point at the same thing: settle the value properly, because it decides whether a claim ends in a repair or a cheque.
The van itself
Make, model, year and berth.
What it is worth
Replacement cost today.
Where it is kept
A drive, a yard or a graded site.
Security fitted
Hitchlock, clamp, alarm, tracker.
Where you take it
UK sites, rallies or Europe.
Who tows it
Owners and anybody else permitted.
How it works
Putting Lunar Cover Together
The process is short. What matters is describing the storage accurately, because it does more to a caravan premium than anything else on the form.
Identify the van
Make, model, year and CRiS number.
Say where it is kept
Home, a storage site or a pitch.
Describe how it is used
Weekends away, long tours, rallies, a seasonal pitch or European trips.
Weigh the quotes up
Price against the replacement basis.
What it covers
What Answers For a Damaged Lunar
The sections that answer for sudden damage to the van, what is inside it, and the awning if you add it.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Damage to the van | Comprehensive cover | Repair or settlement for a Lunar caravan |
| Theft | Included | Hitchlock, clamp and tracker conditions apply |
| Weather damage | Included | Storm, flood, falling branches |
| Equipment and belongings | A limit of its own | Not the same pot as the van |
| Awning | Frequently optional | And frequently forgotten |
| Continental cover | By arrangement | With a limit on days away |
| Legal expenses | An add-on | Recovering an uninsured loss |
The write-off line is closer than it looks. Where a van has a modest market value, a repair bill can exceed it quickly. An agreed value lifts that line and is the main reason owners of older marques arrange one.
What it leaves out
Where the Cover Stops on a Lunar
Every policy has edges, and on a Lunar caravan they fall in fairly predictable places. Damp is the one that surprises people.
Ingress and consequent damp
Sealant and seams are yours to maintain.
Mechanical and structural deterioration
A policy is not a maintenance contract.
Losses where the locks were not fitted
Declared security becomes a condition.
Belongings in an awning overnight
Rarely covered, and worth knowing.
Renting the van out
Unless the policy says otherwise.
Gradual water ingress
The commonest reason a caravan claim is refused.
Lunar vans still touring
The Range of Lunar Models on UK Sites
Lunar built across the touring market over many years, and what survives spans a wide range of ages, sizes and conditions.
Two berth tourers
Light and easy to store.
Four and six berth family layouts
The bulk of what remains.
Well-maintained examples
Worth an agreed value.
Twin-axle Lunars
Higher value, more security.
Vans needing work
Where the repair question bites.
Vans on seasonal pitches
A weather rather than road exposure.

Who it suits
The Owners Behind the Lunar Badge
Lunar owners are used-market buyers, and a fair number are people keeping a good van going rather than replacing it.
Long-term owners
Vans kept for many seasons.
Used-market buyers
Space without the new price.
Owners restoring a van
Where agreed value earns its keep.
Owners weighing a repair
Deciding whether to keep it.
Twin-axle owners
Higher value, older van.
Seasonal pitch holders
One site through the year.

Repair or settle
A Lunar in Storage vs One Kept at Home
This is the decision behind every claim on an older van, and the basis you chose at the quote is what decides which way it goes.
| Repair | Settle | |
|---|---|---|
| When it happens | Damage below the threshold | Damage above it |
| What you keep | The van | A settlement figure |
| What lifts the threshold | An agreed value | A low market value |
| What to do first | Get the figure agreed | Keep the evidence |

What Sets the Price of Lunar Cover
The van, its value, where it is kept, the security fitted and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why the agreed value does the heavy lifting
On a van no longer in production there is no equivalent new caravan to replace it with, so the figure agreed in advance is the figure that matters. It also raises the point at which a repair is still economic, which is the practical benefit owners feel.
Why parts come through the trade
Common items are available through caravan specialists rather than a manufacturer, which is workable but slower for anything unusual. It is another argument for settling the value question before you need the answer.

FAQs
Lunar Caravan Insurance FAQs
Answers on the towing car, new for old, storage, security devices and damp.
Can a Lunar still be insured?
Yes, routinely. A marque no longer in production narrows the number of insurers interested rather than closing the market, and specialist brokers place older tourers every day. The basis of settlement is the thing to agree up front.
Why does the repair threshold matter so much?
Because a repair is only carried out while it costs less than settling. On a van with a modest market value that line arrives quickly, and an agreed value is what moves it far enough to keep a good caravan on the road.
How do I get an agreed value?
With evidence: photographs inside and out, a recent service record and a damp check, and on a restored van a written valuation. Agreeing it at the quote is far easier than arguing it after a claim.
Are Lunar parts still available?
Common items are, through the caravan trade rather than a factory. Something unusual can take longer, which is worth knowing when you weigh up whether a repair is the right answer.
What should I check before buying one?
Damp first, then the chassis, the seals and the service history. A documented damp check behind a van is both a better purchase and a simpler one to insure.
Is an older van dearer to insure?
Not usually by much. The lower value pulls the premium down while the narrower market pushes it up, and the two largely meet. Storage and security still do more than the year.
Is damp covered at all?
No, on any caravan whatever its age. Gradual ingress is treated as maintenance rather than a sudden event, which is exactly why the service record carries so much weight on a van of this vintage.
Do the same security rules apply?
They do. A hitchlock and a wheelclamp are expected on an older van just as on a new one, and whatever you declare has to be used every time the caravan is left.
Will the towing car’s policy do for a Lunar caravan?
No. It extends third-party liability while towing and nothing more. The caravan itself, its contents and everything that happens when it is unhitched sit outside it entirely.
What settlement basis should I look for?
New for old while the van is within the age limit, then agreed value if it is older or unusual. Market value is the weakest of the three and worth identifying before you buy rather than after a total loss.
Do I need a tracker?
Not usually required, but frequently rewarded. Trackers improve the odds of recovering a stolen van, and insurers price that in, particularly on higher-value or twin-axle vans.
Does a caravan need its own no claims bonus?
Many insurers run one, built up separately from the car. It is worth asking how yours is earned and whether it can be protected, because a single claim can undo several years.
What locks will I be asked to fit?
A hitchlock and a wheelclamp are the usual minimum, and they have to be used rather than owned. Insurers check after a theft, and a van taken with the clamp in the locker is a difficult conversation.
Is a driveway acceptable to insurers?
Generally yes, and it is what a good many owners do. A gated or graded storage site usually rates better, so if you have the choice it is worth pricing both.
Does a caravan need an MOT?
Touring caravans are not tested, but servicing still matters. A serviced van with a damp check behind it is easier to insure and easier to claim on than one with no history.
Can anyone tow it?
Subject to the policy terms and their licence entitlement. What a driver may tow depends on when they passed their test and the combined weight, so check before handing over the keys.
