Buccaneer Caravan Insurance
cover for a large premium tourer, where the outfit matters as much as the van
Cover for a Buccaneer touring caravan in its own right. It answers for sudden damage, theft and storm, and on a large premium van the sum insured, the security and the tow car match all carry more weight than usual.
- Large premium tourers
- Often twin axle
- The outfit matters
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerBuccaneer sits at the top of the British range: long, well equipped and frequently twin axle. Two things follow. The sum insured has to reflect a substantial van rather than an average one, and the outfit matters, because a heavy caravan behind an unsuitable car is a problem before any insurer is involved. Tell us the van and what tows it, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

At a glance
A Buccaneer at a Glance, for Owners
Six things a Buccaneer owner should settle before buying cover.
- Match the van to the tow car
- Weight, noseweight and stability
- Insure a substantial figure properly
- These are not average vans
- Twin axles attract attention
- Security is asked about in detail
- Storage has to take the length
- Not every site does
- A mover is near-essential
- And needs declaring
- Declare European trips
- Capped in days as usual
The basics
What Makes a Buccaneer Its Own Rating Question
A Buccaneer is a big, well-equipped van, so everything scales up: the sum insured, the security expected and the practical question of what is pulling it and where it will stand.
The van itself
Make, model, year and berth.
What it is worth
Replacement cost today.
Where it is kept
A drive, a yard or a graded site.
Security fitted
Hitchlock, clamp, alarm, tracker.
Where you take it
UK sites, rallies or Europe.
Who tows it
Owners and anybody else permitted.
How it works
Between the Enquiry and the Buccaneer Price
It is a quick form. The care goes into the value and the storage, because those are the fields an underwriter reads first.
Give the van details
Make, model, year and berth.
Name the storage arrangement
It does more than anything else.
Describe how it is used
Weekends away, long tours, rallies, a seasonal pitch or European trips.
Compare properly
Replacement basis, contents limit, excess.
What it covers
Cover That Earns Its Keep on a Buccaneer
The sections that answer for sudden damage to the van, what is inside it, and the awning if you add it.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Accidental damage | Comprehensive | The section that answers for a Buccaneer caravan |
| Theft and attempted theft | Included | Conditioned on locks and storage |
| Storm, flood and weather | Included | The most frequent claim in the trade |
| Contents and equipment | A separate limit | Awning gear, cycles, electronics |
| Awning cover | Optional on many policies | Worth pricing if you use one |
| European touring | Declared in advance | Usually with a day limit |
| New for old replacement | Age dependent | Ask where the cut-off falls |
The outfit is part of the risk. A long twin-axle van behind a car at the edge of its towing limit is harder to control and harder to place, and most caravan damage happens while manoeuvring rather than at speed.
What it leaves out
What Falls Outside a Buccaneer Policy
The cover answers for sudden damage. What follows sits outside it, and the list is short enough to read properly.
Damp, rot and gradual ingress
The single commonest reason a caravan claim fails.
Everyday wear and fading
Not sudden, so not insured.
Theft where the conditions were not met
Locks, clamps and site grade all count.
Contents left unattended in an annexe
Ask what the limit actually is.
Letting, hire or business use
Declare it or it is outside the cover.
Gradual water ingress
The commonest reason a caravan claim is refused.

Who it suits
Owners Touring With a Buccaneer
Buccaneer owners are usually experienced caravanners at the top of their buying, towing with a substantial car and touring for weeks rather than weekends.
Experienced caravanners
At the top of the range.
Families needing space
Fixed beds and separate areas.
Twin-axle owners
High values and high security.
Long-distance tourers
Weeks away at a time.
Seasonal pitch holders

The van and the tow car
Agreed Value vs Market Value on a Buccaneer
On a van this size the caravan is only half the picture. What tows it decides how safely it travels and how easily it is placed, and both feed the claims record.
| The van | The tow car | |
|---|---|---|
| What is insured | The caravan | The car |
| Which policy responds | The caravan policy | The motor policy |
| While towing | Damage to the van | Third-party liability |
| What to get right | Sum insured and security | Towing limit and noseweight |

Why Two Buccaneer Owners Pay Different Prices
The van, its value, where it is kept, the security fitted and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why a twin axle is rated differently
Two axles mean a longer, heavier and more valuable van. It is also a van that tows away steadily behind almost anything, which is why insurers ask about trackers and secure storage on this kind of caravan more insistently than on a small tourer.
Why the storage question is harder here
Not every driveway or storage site takes a long twin axle, and the sites that do are sometimes further away. Where the van actually stands is what gets rated, so describe the real arrangement.

Four Requirements on a Buccaneer Policy
A short list, but the one that matters. An insurer will look at these first if you ever claim on a Buccaneer caravan.
Fit the locks and use them
Theft claims turn on this more than anything.
Maintain the registration record
It supports a recovery and a claim.
Declare a change of storage
Before it happens, not after.
Keep the van serviced and damp-checked
It will not create cover, but it protects one.

FAQs
Buccaneer Caravan Insurance FAQs
Answers on the towing car, new for old, storage, security devices and damp.
Is a twin axle more expensive to insure?
Generally yes. The van is worth more and it tows away more steadily than a single axle, so both the sum insured and the theft exposure sit higher. Good storage and a tracker do more to offset that than anything else.
Does the tow car affect the caravan policy?
It is asked about, and it matters practically. A van at the limit of what the car can pull is harder to control and harder to place, and manoeuvring damage is the commonest caravan claim.
What security is expected on a Buccaneer?
A hitchlock and a wheelclamp as the baseline, and on a van of this value an alarm and a tracker are frequently asked for. Whatever you declare becomes a condition of the theft cover.
How should I value one?
On the cost of replacing an equivalent as specified today. These vans carry a great deal of equipment, and a figure taken from the age and berth count will be short of the mark.
Is a motor mover covered?
Only where declared. On a van this size a mover is close to essential, and it is a valuable fitted accessory that sits outside the standard contents figure unless you mention it.
Will any storage site take it?
Not all of them. Length and weight rule out some sites, and the ones that do take a large twin axle may be further from home. Tell the insurer where the van actually stands.
Is damp covered on a premium van?
No. Gradual ingress is excluded on every caravan regardless of price, so an annual damp check as part of the service is the practical protection on a Buccaneer as much as anywhere else.
Should I take agreed value?
On an older Buccaneer it usually makes sense. Once new for old no longer applies, fixing the figure in advance with photographs and a service record avoids a market valuation you may not recognise.
Is caravan insurance a legal requirement?
Nothing obliges you to hold it, unlike the car towing it. What makes it worth having is that no other policy answers for a stolen, storm-damaged or written-off caravan, and the replacement cost falls entirely on the owner.
What do insurers ask about first?
The van, its value and where it is kept. Security devices come next, then who uses it and where it goes. Storage carries more weight on a caravan quote than almost anything else.
Will a claim on the car affect the caravan policy?
It can, because insurers usually ask about claims across all your vehicles. Declare them, since an undeclared claim is a straightforward route to a refused one later.
Is an awning covered as standard?
Frequently not. Awnings take the worst of the wind and are one of the more common claims, so it is worth checking whether yours is included and at what limit.
Do I have to use the locks every time?
Yes, if you declared them, and that includes a single night on the drive. The condition applies whenever the van is left, not only when it is in long-term storage.
Is a storage site better than home?
Usually for the premium, though not always for convenience. A graded site with gates, cameras and barriers reduces the theft exposure, and insurers price that difference.
Will an older caravan be refused?
Rarely. Age changes the settlement basis rather than the availability of cover, and an agreed value is the usual route once new for old no longer applies. What narrows is the number of insurers interested, which is a reason to compare rather than a reason to worry.
What about the contents I leave in it?
There is a limit, and it is separate from the van. Cycles, awning equipment and electronics add up quickly, so check the figure against what you actually leave on board.
